Last updated at 4:09 PM on 11th November 2010A computer game that challenges players to assassinate former Cuban president Fidel Castro has provoked outrage in Cuba.
Call of Duty: Black Ops – which went on sale in the UK this week – sees players take on the role of a special operative as he saves the US from a communist plot, travelling between Cuba, Vietnam and Russia.
The game’s first mission is to assassinate a young Castro before the 1962 missile crisis, the moment when the Cold War came closest to tipping into a full-blown nuclear conflict.

‘What the United States government did not manage to do in 50 years, now it attempts to accomplish by virtual means,’ said an article on the website Cubadebate, where Castro regularly publishes opinion pieces.
The site was referring to the numerous plots to kill the Cuban president, which the Cuban government claims was a staggering 638 times.
On one hand, the game ‘glorifies the attempts that in an illegal manner the United States government planned against Castro,’ while on the other it ‘stimulates sociopathic behavior among American children and adolescents, the main consumers’ of those games, Cubadebate said.

US attempts to assassinate Castro were approved during the presidencies of Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy.
Cuban exiles were responsible for most attempts on Castro’s life starting in the 1970s.
Castro, now 84, led Cuba from the 1959 revolution until he stepped down for health reasons in 2006. His brother Raul Castro is currently the president of the communist nation.
The latest installment of the hit Call of Duty franchise takes gamers inside the former Soviet Union and southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

Call of Duty: Black Ops, from the Activision unit of France’s Vivendi, follows Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, last year’s biggest grossing console game with more than 20 million units sold around the world.
Expectations for the Cold War chapter are high: IT marketing firm IDC forecasts that 11.7 million copies will be shifted in the United States by the end of the year alone.
It is the seventh game in the series and the third to be developed by US-based developer Treyarch.

“Ready for an LSD trip? That’s pretty much what’s going to happen when you flip through the pages of The Sinister Truth, courtesy of Jason Ciaccia and A. Norhanian. This comic details the fictional goings-on surrounding agents involved in the very real government funded investigations of the potential espionage uses of LSD. Specifically, the use of LSD to create CIA agents who would go to Cuba and attempt to make Castro’s beard fall out in order to humiliate him and drive him from power.
Sound outlandish? It’s all apparently true. Copious footnotes adorn this good-sized graphic novel, and in the back there are some declassified memos to flip through. Being the thorough journalist that I am, I just take their word for it. The book hits some navel-gazing heights along with its protagonists, so if you don’t like that kind of thing you could safely stay away from this one. If you did that, however, you’d miss out on the glory that is an LSD-crazed CIA agent kung-fu fighting a naked Fidel Castro in the shower. You heard me.
The art style in this book stays frenetic, to match the subject matter, flowing in and out of recognizable shapes along with the perceptions of the protagonists as they trip balls. The whole thing runs the risk of falling too much into “don’t trust the government” style paranoia, or drug culture in-jokes, but the creators keep it from going to far down either of those paths. The Sinister Truth is definitely worth a look, if for nothing else than to have a good laugh at the thought of what your government may or may not have been up to in more “innocent” times. Makes you wonder what they’re up to now, doesn’t it? Or maybe that’s just the acid talking…”
